The Beast Burger and Other Tidbits of LifeNuts Wisdom

December’s blog never happened – mostly because I was firing on all cylinders, trying to finish my new book on Islay, a Scottish island that is closer to Ireland (25 miles) than it is to the Scottish mainland. Its history and people captivated me and book preparations took much of my time last month. The book released this week, The Secrets of Islay – a non-fiction tale of a marathon, golf, and single malt Scotch – set on a magical Scottish island. A new Caballo Blanco emerges, questions about life are answered, and an ancient island reveals itself – all in the course of a Sunday afternoon’s reading. It’s available on Amazon (in eBook format – with color photos), but, if you decide to purchase a paperback, please do so through the publisher – virtualbookworm.com – since that raises more funds, which I am donating to the Islay high school for their mission trip.

I stumbled upon a fascinating article in Outside magazine, a publication that caters to the wild adventurous younger man. But this piece featured the beast burger, a vegan, plant-protein-based performance food, that should find the shelves in Whole Foods this month. Scientists, supported with advice from Bill Gates (yes, the Bill Gates), have developed a burger that tastes like meat. And they’re working on making it taste even better. A New York Times food critic thought it was real meat. So did Twitter founder – who invested in Beyond Meat, the company that makes the “burger.”

In 2010 the CDC and the FDA tested meat (the real kind) sold in American retail outlets. Over 5,000 samples in 11 states. They were looking for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which they found in 90& of ground beef, 88% of pork chops, and (for all you chicken lovers) 95% of chicken breasts. The author commented on the YouTube videos of slaughter houses where the high-speed slicing of cows fills the air with a mist of feces that penetrates everything. Feces is the breeding ground for Ecoli bacteria and friends. Even organic beef is prepared this way.

Apparently, millennials are noticing this and shifting their eating away from real meat. However, it’s still the staple of 97% of Americans.

New Year’s resolutions are easy to make, but they’re practically useless if they aren’t written down and looked at every day. That’s the way goals are accomplished. In our illustrious city newspaper last week, a writer discussed goals and advised readers to be cautious. She claimed that setting goals could have a negative effect on one’s self image since most goals are not met. Give me a break. I’ve set goals every year for the last 40 years and I don’t regret setting one of them. Yes, I didn’t achieve all of them, but I did achieve many. Writing goals down on paper, formulating action plans, looking at them every day, and working hard to accomplish goals are what separate the men from the boys. Period. I would much rather set a goal and not reach it than never set it in the first place. LifeNuts have goals – all kinds of them – health, financial, relationship, self-image, spiritual, volunteerism. The list can be endless. Go for it!
