Defying the odds and limitations associated with a century-old life, Mike Fremont keeps going strong. This morning at a county park in the Cincinnati area I took this photo of the man, whose lifestyle of exercise and vegan eating inspired me to develop LifeNuts. Though he no longer drives (his wife does) and though he's hard of hearing (even with hearing aids), Mike shows no mental deterioration. His sense of humor is evident in his smiling face and he proudly wears his Boston marathon t-shirt from 1983.
His wife Marilyn told me that his running has dropped from about 30 miles a week to only 10. And she needs to watch him carefully since his balance isn't as good as it once was.
Still, his heart is still ticking, his brain is sharp, and he's still enjoying life to the fullest. In May he ran the Flying Pig marathon one-mile race. Yes, it wasn't a marathon but, compared to those his age in wheelchairs, running a mile is impressive. He would ascribe his success to his vegan diet and to the 10 miles a week he walks. Hopefully he'll be with us for years to come!!
